26.09.06. new! Joining a club for running.

Although the Cross Country and Road Running season is finished it is a good idea to join up with a local club for Athletics if you would like to work on your speed (ie for starting and finishing!). Here are two contacts of two central clubs and I'm sure others may email Paul M. with detaills of their clubs(eg North Canterbury, New Brighton, QE Athletic, Port Hills etc.). Enjoy!

Christchurch Avon: Wednesday Club night at Burnside High Ph. Marilyn Morrison 3486-581 marilynmorrison@clear.net.nz

Papanui Toc-H: Tuesday Club night. Ph. Maria Kilden (ph. 352 3483) or Mary-Ann Lyons (ph. 354 2285).

Cheers,

Paul Norton :)

26.09.06. new! Few notices:

Two bits of lost property. I have a royal blue pull over Kathmandu fleece, adults size left in one of the motels. I also have a watch left at the run at Taylor dam. Pls get in touch for either.

Team photos - not quite ready yet, and apologies for this, so thanks for your patience. I will email you when they are ready. If anyone has any good ideas on how to best distribute these without having to post, these will be gratefully received! If you have any photos from Blenheim, these can be shared via our website.

Kind regards, Kelly.

26.09.06. new! More photos from Blenheim added to Gallery thanks to Gordon Stamper and Findlays family.

24.09.06 new! Hi team! Please check out the final results with times and teams places - please let me know if there are any errors - the Year 5/6 boys seemed to be one place out at one stage - not sure what happened? Thanks again for a great event and wonderful to have Wellington join us as well as a combined Tasman team. I will send more details of next years' event as they come to hand.

Paul Norton:)

23.09.06 new! Six dozens pictures from Blenheim added to Gallery, thanks to Paul Milkin. If you have some good pictures send them over to web-master and we will share them with the rest of the team.

21.09.06 new! The team is back home with heaps of medals and Phil Costley shield! However our web-designer Paul was probably last to arrive home and therefore there were no news during last couple of days. We have lots of photographs to put on the site, it will take some time though. We do not have any official results yet but expect them within next couple of days. So keep on cheking the site, and feel free to download any pictures you like. Cheers

Paul Milkin

15.09.06 new! Thanks to all who turned up to our last team training at Halswell on Thursday. We practised some starts, had 4km of light fartlek and had the Canterbury team 80m sprint champs! We had a few winners with Taylor Harrison, Hugo McDougall, Karl Hammond, Lori Watt and Clara Todd near the front.

We had a neat photo published in the Bay Harbour News - I have extra 25 copies for those who didn't get one on Thursday - will bring them and the video to Blenheim.

Training - take it VERY EASY now and rest up with light jogging and a few soft sprints. Please try to avoid any activities where you might get injured over the next few days and get some good sleep! You are all looking good and we hope to bring the Phil Costley Shield back with us on Thursday!

See you on Tuesday!

Paul Norton:)

Cheques should be made payable to 'cash' – thanks.

14.09.06 new! Note - race time have changed again as there will NOT be separate Year 5 races ie 1.20pm Race Brief 1.30pm Year 5/6 Boys 1.45pm Year 5/6 Girls and then as schedule on web

Paul:)

13.09.06 new! One week to go!
How time flies. We had a great time on Sunday with a massive turn out of the team and families with only a few people missing. Paul Milkin has some outstanding photos in the Gallery of you going through the river. I was impresssesd by your racing and a few of you really needed the race as you are a little short of “race fitness”.

Training for the last week:
Key words are short and fast followed by rest – you need to be “jumping out of your skin” come next Wednesday!

Wednesday 13.9: 6 to 8 x 45metre wind sprints each 100 m with 10-15 mins. jog.
Thursday 14.9: Practise fast start and 30 mins. light fartlek running
(we will do this at Halswell)
Friday 15.9: Rest
Saturday 16.9
: Time trial 600-1000m (ie 2-3.30 mins. fast running)

Sunday 17.9: Jog from 15-45mins (depend on age) but very slow
Monday 18.9: Jog 15-30 mins and lots of stretching and a couple of 50 metre stride outs.
Tuesday 19.9: Rest or 1/4 hr. light jog to settle nerves Wednesday
20.9: INTER REGIONAL CROSS COUNTRY!

Enjoy!
Paul Norton:)

05.09.06 new! Pictures from Barnett Park added to Gallery thanks to Paul Norton

05.09.06 new! Around 35-40 of us enjoyed a great run up Barnett Park on Tuesday. We had the Bay Harbour News take our photo and we explored two caves (one with a mystery possible resident?) on the way up and down the valley. It was a tough hill run up but a lovely downhill stretch and some excellent views too. Thanks for coming - have a look at the photos. Paul Norton

05.09.06 new! Notice from Blenheim race organizers!

Hi ! I have changed the race schedule slightly to allow for a Year 5 race. This is to help with numbers as we would have too many in the Year 5/6 race which could make the start dangerous. Because Wellington has no Year 5's and Nelson/Marlborough smaller numbers we will only have individual Year 5 medals - this is still an incentive for these guys and will hopefully encourage them to do well next year as Year 6's. I have put their races first so this gives time for the Wellington runners to warm up etc.

Thank you to Canterbury who have offered to pay for the extra team medals this year. Next year we may have to look at charging the runners more to cover costs etc.

I have organised race recorders who will record finishers as they come in. I will need some help in determining team medals if Dave or Paul could help out or is their someone coming who would be good at this job?

Wellington have kindly supplied an official starter from Athletics Wellington.

Thanks Nicky

04.09.06 new! Results for Saturday NZ Road Champs added!

Well done to all of you who ran on Saturday - some fantastic results.
Just remember that Cross country is quite different so don't get too disheartened if other people beat you who usually don't - also for Year 5/6 children this was a long race compared to your 2km. Great running from you all anyway!

See you all on Tuesday - a lovely hill run in Barnett Park - I did it today, 4.5km and some great views and lots of seats to stop for a rest and a neat cave to explore at half way. Please wear your Canty. singlet as a local paper may be coming for photos - especially of local runners from Sumner, Mt Pleasant, Redcliffes, Heathcote etc. Paul Norton:)

03.09.06 new! About 40 new pictures from yesterdays NZ Road Champs added to gallery, thanks to Paul Norton and Paul Milkin

31.08.06 new! Thanks to all the 60 runners who came to training on Wednesday - our biggest turn-out so far - with the Year 7 girls having 10/11 runners there. Great to see us on TV1 News with Phil Costley too! I have a video of it if you want to see it. Great to see children trying hard at training too.

Hope to see many of you racing hard on Saturday - a reminder to wear your Canterbury singlet, wear your reg. no. if you are registered with a club or if you are not you will need to get a number on the day from the caravan/tent at the start finsh /line. All the best to those racing at the AIMS Cross Country in Tauranga on Monday (they will NOT race on Saturday). Enjoy the chance to race against children of all ages, try to run even 1km split times and bring home the last 500m if you can - the race is basically 6 x 500m sections. You should get a good time. Wear shoes with lots of support and warm down with a jog and stretch to get rid of the lactic acid. A walk in cold water (ie at the beach) is a good way to recover! Have a light jog on grass on Sunday.

See you there! Meet 11.00am at Landfill Ave, Cnr Prestons/Burwood Rd - through the roundabout.

Paul Norton:)

30.08.06. new! Not sure how to get to the Holiday Park we are staying in? Do not want to miss a dinner you have already paid for because you get lost in Bleneheim? Download the map with the Tavern and Holiday Park shown!

29.08.06 new! NZ Road Champs notice!

All runners running on Saturday at the NZ Road Champs need to wear their Canterbury singlet and their CLUB REGISTRATION NUMBER - if they are registered. I also need their registration number to complete their entry if they could let me know it on Wednesday or email me asap - I have all CHA runners reg. nos. Those not registererd will be given a number to wear on the day. Runners will need to arrive well before their race at 11.45am (say 11.00am) to get their number and warm up. The Girls Grade 16 race is at 11.00am so they cheer on Canterbury runners. After the 3km race at 11.45am is the Boys 16 grade race also so they watch that too.

More information about the race in the official entry form (pdf file) - you do not need to fill it, all done already

26.08.06. new! Christchurch Avon King/Queen of the Mountain
Clifton Hill/Brownlee Reserve – Sumner
Saturday 26 August 2006

A keen field of 31 faced the 800m run uphill and for the second year in a row the winner was someone who estimated their time to the exact second – well done Matt Cantwell – he also got 3rd fastest boys’ time! Ten runners were within 4 seconds of their estimated time! No records were broken but Margot Gibson (4.42) was only 16 seconds off Nicki McFadzien’s 2005 time of 4.26 – but she couldn’t beat her Dad! Hugo McDougall (4.18) and Nick Merrett (4.18) were the fastest boys, 13 seconds off Alex Manton’s 2005 record of 4.05.

Haley Mercer had an excellent run in the girls to take third fastest behind Margot and Laura Wood (both 2006 Canterbury Road Champions) and to head another Canterbury Road Champ, Katie Hammar. Kieran Metherell had a superb run to beat 5mins. as a Year 6 boy.

Twelve Primary Sports Canterbury runners took part and a few parents too. Thanks to Bob (50 Akaroa Relays in a row 2006) and Wendy Perry for their hospitality.

20.08.06 One Month to go - training advice, and few notices.
Today is the 20th of August and one month to go till the Inter Regional Cross Country. The next two and half weeks should be the hardest training you do. After each run you should feel pleasantly tired. The theme for this 17 days is HARD and HILLS. Each run should be AEROBIC – which means you are running at about 70-90% of your race pace – so it should be hard work. Try to add some hills over the next two weeks. Depending where you live….try running from The sign of the Takahe to the sign of the Kiwi and back….or more hills out at Woodend Beach Domain….or Halswell Quarry with Phil Chapman on Mondays at 4pm or at the slopes at the University track or in The Duncan Park in Heathcote…keep to the grass and recover downhill with long strides and arms by your side and low and big breaths.

The last two weeks leading up to Blenheim should be tapering off and some short fast stuff…more details later.

Omaka Races – September 10th
Our run at Omaka at 2.30pm on Sunday the 10th will be your last race before Blenheim. We will race in our age groups and you can wear your spikes. We will have a river crossing included. We will also have team photos by Paul Farrow of Paul’s Camera Shop. Please do not bring your own cameras to this. I will advise you of the costs for photos closer to the event. Please wear your Canterbury singlet. Please, please turn up to this and plan to come now!

Congratulations…..
To Brooke Cantwell who made the Primary Sports Canterbury Year 8 Netball team….to Tayla Harrison for making the Primary Sports Canterbury Rugby Team….to Megan de Lambert, Clara Todd and Phoebe Steele who have made the Canterbury Development Hockey team……to Sam Davis who won the Canterbury Primary and Intermediate Schools’ Ski Race at Mt. Cheeseman recently….to Tandia Molina (Aerobics and Hip Hop), Sam Davis, Hebe-Jane and Millie Haughey (Star of the Sea Canty. CC Reps.) who were in this week’s Bay Harbour News….let me know of other successes.

Canterbury Road Championships – Sunday 20 August
Well done to all of you who ran in the Canterbury Road Championships at Burwood on Sunday. There were a number of you in your Canterbury singlets as well as many of you running for your clubs. New Canterbury Road Champions from the team or associated with the team are: Francesca Silvester G10, Clara Todd G11, Becky Bouterey G13, Caleb Stamper B9, Nick Findlay B10 and Carl Chapman B12. I took a few photos too.

New Zealand Road Championships – 11.45am, Landfill Avenue, Burwood, Saturday 2 September
In conjunction with the NZ Road Championships there is a 3km race for children aged 14 and under as at 31/12/06. We will enter all of the Canterbury team unless you email Paul Norton at paul.norton@fendalton.school.nz by Saturday 26 August. Children running in the Tauranga Y7/8 CC race later that week SHOULD NOT race this event but can jog it as training or watch.

19.08.06 Thanks to the 35 runners who came to training at Halswell on Thursday. It was the wettest event I have ever seen. It was a great opportunity for many children to use their spikes as we did some hill work and a 1km effort run. I should have had my spikes on as I went for the biggest fall and
slide of the day when setting up the course! Looking strong on the day
were Jessica Kikstra and Meikayla Moore in the Year 5 girls, Captains Clara Todd, Megan de Lambert, James Welsh and Brooke Cantwell were running well as was Tom Hammar in the Year 8 boys. Other non- Canterbury runners looking strong were Alex Margaritis, Selerna Metherell and Caleb Stamper and Sean Eustace.

Paul Norton

14.08.06 Jackets notice!

Have picked up some of the jackets and will take them to training on Thursday at Halswell. The others will be ready next week.

Deb Brownie

13.08.06 The Christchurch Avon Athletic Club Road Champs held in Hagley Park saw thirty Canterbury runners putting on their road shoes for some fast racing with the CHA club runners too. A cold biting wind keep times slow but there were some impressive runs from many of our runners. In the younger 10 and under 2km James Minty was again in good form ahead of Port Hill's Jake Marryatt and in the girls Ashley Martin had an excellent race to hold out Francesca Silvester. Over 3km Daniel Franks just pipped Hugo McDougall with Becky Bouterey ahead of Brooke Kennedy in the girls. Thanks to all who came along - there is no substitute for some good fast racing to get you race fit - but do recover - light jogging for a couple of days and a few stretches.

09.08.06 extra training run added

Due the change for Omaka until 10 Septemebr we have added an extra Canterbury team training run : 4.30-5.15pm Thursday 17 August at Halswell Quarry - meet at the start of the CC races. We will do a little hill work and a 1km time trial so you may like to wear spikes if you have them

08.08.06 report from today......and a few photos- sorry group one is blurred

Congratulations to the 31 children and half a dozen adults who braved the elements and came out to our training run at Woodend Beach Domain. Top attendance went to the Year 5 girls with their captain and 6 others attending whilst there was only one year six girl! Great to see Julian from Cheviot, three from Sumner and one from Linclon.

We had a wonderful run in the wet but being on sand there was no real mud as such. We ran sand dunes to touch the sea then did some hill work on the dunes then Anton Cooper (Woodend School) led us on his 2.7km run through tracks and puddles. Finally Jaye Atkin led us on her 900m run which including the big mean sand dune as well. A wet, tiring but fun time was held by all.

Paul Norton

07.08.06 Few notices

Thanks
Paul Norton

05.08.06 - Port Hills Race pictures added, thanks to Paul Norton.

05.08.06 - Port Hills Under 17 Cross Country
We had about 40 runners from the Canterbury Team at these races. Thanks to all of you who made the effort - it is something very special and to be treasured to represent your province. Canterbury singlets were prominent in all three races as well as other Canterbury runners who were running in their club singlets. Results will be out in a day or two but I will give a few results. Race one for under 11s saw James Minty(Y6) hold out our Year 5 Captain - Nick Findlay with Year 4 runner Caleb Stamper in 3rd - Caleb is coming to Blenheim with us. I think Year 5 Girls captain Francesca Silvester was second behind a Sumner club runner.

In the Under 13 race Year 7 Captain James Welsh won from Carl Chapman who led for the first lap and Tayla Harrison and Mark Cotterrell were well up also. Canterbury runner last Year, Margot Gibson, won the girls' section with high placed Canterbury runners being Brooke Kennedy, Sarah Summerlee (after a fall), Lydia Marshall, and Emily Wood running well in her first race after injury.

Year 8 Captain Karl Hammond won the Under 15/17 race from Jake Stamper (Canterbury last year) with Tom Hammar, Hugo McDougall and Daniel Franks all running well. Brooke Cantwell (Year 8 Captain) ran a well judged race to beat Olivia Moon (Canty last year) and Jaye Atkin and Becky Boutery.

Again thanks to all who made the effort to get there and to parebts who supported and to the Portt Hills Club for organising the event. Results and Certificates to come.

It looks like Wellington will be travelling across to compete on the 20th of September.
Because of this, the race times are slightly changed from that originally indicated and first race will now be at 1.30pm with all prize giving etc expected to be finished by 4.00pm.

The afternoon scheduled for Sunday 20 August: 2.30pm at Omaka Scout Camp will now be held on Sunday 10 September not 20 August. Please bring some afternoon tea to share, families welcome.

We now have 70 parents and children booked on the bus. If anyone else would like to change to the bus we would appreciate it as it will be viable to then take two busses.
